Growth Form: Rhizomatous and usually stoloniferous perennial herbs from scaly rootstocks, usually forming colonies.

Leaves: Leaves compound (odd-pinnate). Leaves in a basal rosette. Blades obovate–cuneate. leaflets 3. Margins serrate. Veins pinnate. Petiolate. Stipules membranous, coherent to base of petioles.

Flowers: Flowers in cymes on a naked scape. Flowers bisexual (perfect) or unisexual (and then plants polygamodioecious). Receptacle turbinate or obconical, bearing an epicalyx at apex, the lobes alternate with the calyx lobes and persistent. Calyx of 5 sepals. Corolla of 5 petals, white, yellow, or sometimes pinkish, elliptic to suborbicular. Stamens numerous, in 1–3 whorls, persistent. Ovary superior, carpels numerous, attached to the elevated conical receptacle; styles lateral.

Fruit: Fruit an aggregate consisting of numerous minute achenes borne on the surface of the enlarged fleshy receptacle. Seeds 1 per achene.
